VMware Horizon on Microsoft Azure

Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure provides customers with the ability to pair their existing Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure with the VMware Horizon Cloud Service™.

In doing so, customers can combine the enterprise features from VMware with the cost-effective Microsoft Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) whilst using their own Azure environment to deliver both VDI and published applications to any device, anywhere.

Horizon Cloud delivers feature-rich virtual desktops and applications using a purpose-built cloud platform that is scalable across multiple deployment options, including fully managed infrastructure from VMware and public cloud infrastructure from Microsoft Azure.

The service supports a cloud-scale architecture that makes it easy to deliver virtualized Windows desktops and applications to any device, anytime.

VMware Horizon Universal License Service

VMware Horizon environments can now be hosted across an array of different cloud platforms as well as on-premises. Additionally, the Horizon Pod Federation allows for users to be dynamically redirected across the different platforms based upon which is best suited to their current location, device type or needs; it becomes difficult to accurately track and manage license usage across your enterprise.

To ease this burden VMware have created a new licensing model, Horizon Universal licensing, to simplify the management of the disparate environments.

The VMware Horizon Service universal license provides customers with a single subscription license for all Horizon products:

  • VMware Horizon Cloud

  • VMware Horizon 7 subscription

This means that a Horizon Cloud customer will now also be entitled to Horizon 7 subscription, and vice versa, a Horizon 7 subscription customer is now also entitled to Horizon Cloud.

The universal license comes in two different versions. The full version supports virtual desktops and apps, and an apps-only license will also be available.

To reiterate, the universal license entitles Horizon 7 subscription and Horizon Cloud customers to all of the following solutions:

  • Horizon 7 subscription – On-premises

  • Horizon 7 subscription – On VMware Cloud™ on AWS

  • Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure

  • Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud

Customers will have the ability to split workloads across these four options as long as the total number of licenses equals the purchased license amount.

With universal license, customers need only one license to flexibly deploy desktops and apps across multiple private and public cloud options. For example, customers can now start with an on-premises deployment and move to the cloud without requiring a new license. Customers now have the ability to mix and match deployments.
