Using Live Transcripts within Microsoft Teams Meetings

I am very excited to see today that Live Transcripts are now becoming available within Microsoft Teams meetings. This is something that I feel people have been waiting for and will be a real game changer when it comes to the productivity, during and after meeting. There used to be a work around with transcripts being generated in Stream with the recording, however this makes it much easier to access the transcript, review parts of the meetings and check out what you may have missed.

Enabling live transcription within your Teams meeting is very simple. To start this, simply click the elipsis on the top bar of your meeting interface and within the dropdown select the ‘Start Transcription’ option.

Once you have selected this, everyone in the meeting will be alerted that you have started this and the transcript pane will pop up on the right-hand side of the meeting interface. You will now see the transcript of the meeting conversation appearing in the transcript pane. I am impressed with the accuracy of the transcript.

You do have the option once the transcript has started to either hide the transcript pane (this will continue to work in the background but you don’t need to see it on screen) or stop it completely.

Once your meeting has ended, it is very easy to find the transcript again in future. To do this, open the meeting invite from your Teams calendar and along the tab bar the last option should be ‘Recordings & Transcription’. Click this tab.

Here you will see the Live transcript of the meeting that took place for you to review and you will also have the option to download a copy of the transcript as a Word doc or VTT file.

In summary, I think the fact that the transcription functionality within Microsoft Teams meetings is now available live in the meeting and easily accessible to locate after a meeting has taken place is going to make meetings more productive. The functionality is impressive, the accuracy of the transcript is brilliant and the process is far easier than the recording in Stream and having to set the transcript after the meeting.
